Safety improvement works at a high-risk road near Warwick will commence on Monday 31 May as part of the federal government’s 2020-21 Black Spot Program.

The intersection of Freestone and Charley’s Gully Roads will undergo safety improvements and upgrades, including works to widen and seal part of Peters Road and install new signage and line markings on Charley’s Gully Road.

A Southern Downs Regional Council spokesperson said local traffic will operate under controlled arrangements which road users must follow.

“Local residents in the area will still have access to and from their properties using alternative routes and (SDRC) staff will endeavour to minimise disruptions for road users where possible,” said the spokesperson.

“While road safety is everyone’s responsibility, (the) council is committed to building better, safer roads across our region for all road users, whether they are locals or visitors who travel here to enjoy everything that our unique locality has to offer.

The spokesperson said that the council, with the federal government’s support, hopes that by identifying and fixing traffic black spots it will reduce serious injury and improve road safety.

Peters Road will be closed between Freestone and Watts Roads for the duration of the works, which are expected to be completed by 11 June 2021.

Standard construction hours will be between 6.30am and 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.

The federal government committed $21,500 to completing improvement works at the intersection of Freestone and Charley’s Gully Roads under the Black Spot Program’s 2020-21 funding round.

The program 2020-21 will see a total $506,500 invested in improving dangerous roads within the SDRC area, including in Freestone, Amiens, Rosenthal Heights and Warwick.
