Stanthorpe couple, Merryl and Ron Anderson, recently gifted part of their land along Quart Pot Creek to Southern Downs Regional Council, stating they wanted the community to be able to enjoy it.

Ron stated he did it because he’s community minded.

“It was out of goodwill for the shire.

“I love this town.”

He stated he had been dedicated to making the area along the creek pleasant for locals for many years, including being involved cleaning up the creek.

Ron stated that the piece of land at the front of their property, which is not fenced off in any way, was frequented by locals already but he felt it should be theirs.

The transfer of the land was approved in a council meeting earlier this year, listed as a “confident business item”.

This item was considered confidential “in accordance with section 254J(3)(h) of the Local Government Regulation 2012”, as it contained “information relating to negotiations relating to the taking of land by the local government under the Acquisition of Land Act 1967”.

However, Merryl and Ron Anderson came forward to let the community know of their gift.

The Council motion detailed that 198m2 of land adjoining Quart Pot Creek between Rotary Park and Heritage Park would be transferred to Council.

Contribution was made towards the cost associated with the survey and transfer of the land.

Authority was delegated to the CEO to finalise the negotiation of the acquisition of the land.

The motion was moved by Councillor Marco Gliori and seconded by Councillor Andrew Gale.
