Mini Tassell.

By Dominique Tassell

I think I’ve made it quite clear that I believe strongly in the will of the people. To me, my job is to ensure that the public is educated on the issues that matter and that impact their lives; and that they can then have their voices heard.

That’s why I find it so ridiculous that public figures are stating that information, their own previous words, being put out into the public sphere is somehow wrong.

To have an elected official state that being reminded of the promises they made is a threat, is just utterly preposterous.

The promises they make matter. The decisions they make matter. They affect people’s lives.

It is absolutely okay to say that with new information and experience you have changed your mind. But to use a Facebook post to excuse you of your duties as an elected official is simply cowardly.

To say that people, who voted you in based on a certain view, opinion, or promise, have no right to be upset that you no longer stand for what they thought you did, makes no sense to me at all.

What is the threat? That they won’t vote for you next time because you no longer represent them in the ways that matter to them?

That’s not a threat. That’s democracy.

Councillors are entirely within their right to change their minds, but so are the locals who vote for them.
