In Brief

Warwick Gymnastics Club has requested SDRC assistance after flooding multiple times.

Gymnastics Club ask for SDRC support

A late item at the 9 June SDRC meeting recommends that SDRC support the Warwick Gymnastic Club Inc. in terms of a “reasonable level of financial assistance”.

The item stated that on 2 February 2022, the Warwick Gymnastic Club Inc. presented to a Council Information Session in relation to drainage and flooding issues that have impacted the Club’s facility at 29 Easey Street, Warwick.

The information provided at the Information Session included equipment damage and losses of approximately $235,000 and costs of over $260,000.

Cr Andrew Gale said he was glad they put in a specific request as without one, “it’s hard for councillors to make an actual decision to support them”.

“I value that club and the enormous contribution they make to the community,” he said.

When asked if councillors would discuss what a “reasonable amount” of financial assistance is, he confirmed they would and that would be up to the meeting.

Due to our print deadline, we were unable to cover the decision for this edition but will share that information online and in next week’s paper.

Greater certainty for Queensland country racing

The State Government is delivering a boost to Queensland’s racing industry, especially country racing, through a new sustainable funding model.

Treasurer and Minister for Trade and Investment Cameron Dick said the changes recognise significant changes that have occurred in the racing industry and the important role country clubs play in regional communities.

“There are 125 racing clubs across Queensland,” the Treasurer said.

“For 85 of those clubs, a race meeting is the biggest or second biggest event in their community each year.

“For many of those clubs, a race meeting is a once-a-year event that is an unparalleled opportunity for people to get together.

“Our government recognises how important those gatherings are to the social fabric of Queensland, and today’s announcement will help them thrive into the future.”

Restrictions eased across state

Restrictions on travel and vaccine requirements have now eased across the state.

Starting last week, Queenslanders who have not been vaccinated can now visit the State’s public and private hospitals.

Health Minister Yvette D’Ath said the further easing of restrictions was possible because of Queensland’s strong health response.

Education Minister Grace Grace also confirmed last week that international travel restrictions no longer apply for state school students, teachers, and department staff.

“Following discussions with my Director-General, I welcome the news that schools have been advised that all international travel restrictions have been lifted with immediate effect,” Ms Grace said.
