Marking 75 years since Australian Citizenship became law, the Southern Downs region celebrated the addition of 12 new citizens on 26 January.

Families and friends gathered at the Warwick Town Hall to commemorate the occasion, embracing the diverse cultural fabric that characterises Australia.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said the Southern Downs was known for embracing its multicultural diversity and using this diversity to make the region shine.

“Together we have formed these unique communities that we call home and that I often refer to as a rich and colourful tapestry,” Cr Pennisi said.

“The differences that divide us have now become our strengths and it is as a result of our forebears that stitched the tapestry that we enjoy a lifestyle second to none.”

The event highlighted the Southern Downs’ commitment to fostering an inclusive environment where individuals from all backgrounds feel welcomed and valued. It embodied Australian values of fairness, equality, and mateship, epitomizing the significance of citizenship.
