Mayoral minute opens up deeper dive into pool decision

A previous decision not to renew the lease of the pool operator at the Allora public swimming pool has been the subject of a mayoral minute at the meeting of the Southern Downs Regional Council.

A mayoral minute recognises the special role of the mayor and does not require a seconder.

Mayor Melissa Hamilton moved that the CEO review the previous council’s decision in relation to the current arrangements of the Allora pool. The original decision was that lessee Andrew Fidge’s contract not be renewed and that the council take over the operation of the pool.

“Because of community requests we have asked staff to fully brief council on this proposal,” she said.

Cr Hamilton said Andrew Fidge would remain the operator of the pool up to the winter recess. In the meantime CEO Dave Burges would review the decision.

Mr Burges said he had listened very attentively to the briefing session and the intentions of [the current] council.

“I can review a decision and make an alternate decision or reinforce that decision or bring it back to council,” he said.

Cr Hamilton confirmed that while it was possible the pool might be an agenda item at the May meeting, the council might decide it did not need to review the CEO’s decision.
