Man jailed over stabbing

A MAN whose violent behaviour progressed from assault to attempted murder has been jailed for almost 13 years.
Nathan Anthony Finnie, 24, was found guilty of attempting to murder Brendan Richmond in an unprovoked attack in Warwick on 22 March.
Finnie’s attempt to plead guilty to the lesser charge of committing a malicious act with intent was refused and he was tried on the more serious charge.
The jury had been told the victim received a knife wound to his stomach and stab wounds to his back and neck, and was admitted to intensive care after the attack.
He came close to death and might have died from blood loss, Justice Debra Mullins told the court.
Justice Mullins found that Finnie intended to kill.
The court heard Finnie had a history of increasingly violent behaviour and was convicted of common assault in April 2008.
At the time of the attempted murder he was on parole after serving jail time for committing grievous bodily harm during a fight in November 2008.
Shortly before the attack on Mr Richmond at a private house in Warwick, an apparently intoxicated Finnie had threatened to stab anyone he didn’t know.
Finnie must serve at least 80 per cent of his 12 years and nine month sentence due to the violent nature of the attack.
