What really matters?

COMMENT By STEVE GRAY

THE State Government recognised the sterling efforts of State Emergency Service volunteers last weekend.
In itself that’s a good thing – we have all seen the magnificent work the SES does.
But a second look at the State Government’s publicity reveals a disturbing trend.
In announcing the Queensland SES Member of the Year the Police, Fire and Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey took nine paragraphs of a statement before we get to the deserving winner’s name.
Nine paragraphs of propaganda, patting his own government on the back and bagging the former Labor government.
So Mr Dempsey’s statement sent to media wasn’t about the SES winners at all – they were merely cover for the minister’s politicising.
That’s a shame. The public, and especially the SES, deserve more.
It’s propaganda taking precedence over public recognition. It shows the minister and the government would rather play politics than put worthy people before the public for praise.
Mr Dempsey isn’t the only culprit.
The State Government needs to stop politicking and start governing.
