Plans for the future

Stopping mining, retaining Slade Campus, creating job opportunities, increasing services for people with disabilities and having a university campus were on top of residents’ wish list when they attended the launch of the Southern Downs Community Plan last week.
Meetings were held in both Warwick and Stanthorpe to workshop ideas for the community’s vision of life in 2030.
Residents also expressed the need for a civic/cultural centre, improved access to health services in Stanthorpe, and to encourage young residents to volunteer and support their local community.
Southern Downs Regional Council manager of community development Sheila Stebbings, who will manage the community consultation process, said these meetings were just a start, with plenty more opportunities for residents to have their say over the coming months.
“We are at the early stages and would love people to get involved, as this is our vision for the community,” Mrs Stebbings said.
Meetings are also planned for Friday, August 12, between 10am and 1pm at the Warwick Town Hall; Monday, August 15, from 11am to 2pm at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre; Tuesday, August 16, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Killarney Sport and Recreation Centre; Thursday, August 18, between 7pm and 9pm at the Wallangarra School of Arts Hall; and Friday, August 19, from 9am to 12pm at the School of Arts Hall, Leyburn.
The Southern Downs Community Plan will be endorsed by the council on December 1.
