Enabling residents to pay rates twice yearly instead of in one massive hit annually is an excellent suggestion. It’s also surprising our own council didn’t make the suggestion.
Southern Downs Regional Council is the only council in the region that requires annual payments of rates.
I did a ring around of our closest neighbours: Lockyer Valley, Western Downs, Goondiwindi, Maranoa, Toowoomba, South Burnett, Gympie and Scenic Rim regional councils all levy rates twice per year. I can’t imagine Southern Downs Regional Council would not be aware of this.
There is absolutely no justification why the council should do annual rate collection unless it is to assist with the massive interest earning potential they would be receiving from such a huge cash injection.
