Step out and be a C-vivor

Cancer Council Queensland is calling for local cancer survivors to help start-up an active support group in Warwick and begin walking groups and other social activities.
Cancer Council Queensland’s C-vivor program promotes light exercise activities for cancer survivors and provides an opportunity for support and friendship with fellow cancer survivors in the area.
Warwick resident and breast cancer survivor, Jan Byrne, is calling on fellow cancer survivors and patients to join her in establishing the region’s first group.
“There are many people in our community who have either survived cancer or are still undergoing treatment for cancer and are looking for the kind of support that the C-vivor program offers,” Ms Byrne said.
“As a two-time cancer survivor, I think keeping active and staying social are very important for recovery, and I think C-vivor is the perfect opportunity for local cancer survivors, like myself, to keep our minds and our bodies healthy,” she said.
“Cancer Council Queensland has been wonderful during my cancer experience and starting this group is one way I can help them to support the community.
“I invite all locals who have been affected by cancer to show their support for each other and join me in forming Warwick’s first C-vivor group,” Ms Byrne said.
Cancer Council Queensland’s C-vivor co-ordinator Sylvia Burns said the adoption of a long-term healthy lifestyle following cancer treatment has been shown to improve quality of life and reduce the risk of cancer recurrence.
“C-vivor adds the benefits of physical activity to those of peer support for cancer survivors, a combination that creates a positive social environment that ensures the long-term physical and mental well-being of each participant who becomes involved,” Ms Burns said.
“Regardless of your age or gender, each and every cancer survivor in the Warwick area is welcome to join in and become actively involved in this great support group,” she said.
C-vivor groups are run by cancer survivors and patients with the support and co-ordination of Cancer Council Queensland.
For more information on C-vivor groups or how you can get involved, call Sylvia Burns on (07) 3634 5382, visit www.c-vivor.org.au or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.
