CROSS PLAYERS CONQUER TEXAS

The Southern Cross Bowls Club was well represented in Texas on Sunday at Open Fours Carnival.

Cameron Wilson and Wayne Foster from the Cross partnered with Julie and Mark Lister from Tannymorel to win the Carnival. The Cross also provided the entire team of runner’s up – Dave Scotney, Clark Davidson, Barry Ziebell and Kim Hankinson.

Meanwhile back at the Cross, Kev Mooney and Roger Cavanagh were the winners of the Social Bowls. Some of the excuses heard during play included … getting used to the new bowls, playing with his old bowls; not enough to drink; wrong shoes and not his day.

Very unusual no-one blamed the wind. The rain, heat or the cold, couldn’t be blamed either There were some good bowls played and I’m told perfection on the green is seldom achieved but chased by many.

The Yowie, Cameron Wilson will be kicking himself that he wasn’t at the club as his number rolled out in the lucky members draw. The good news is that the Jackpot now stands at $50.

Today, Thursday (10/11) the club is holding a Special General Meeting at the club to discuss and vote on amalgamation. The meeting starts at 6pm and all members are encouraged to come along and have their say.

There will be no Social Bowls at the Club this weekend. The club is closed for a private party on Saturday and the Warwick East are holding their Carnival on Sunday.

A reminder that for barefoot bowls, social and competition bowls, functions and bar, it is hard to go past the Southern Cross Bowls Club Inc. located opposite St Mary’s Church in Warwick.

STANTHORPE CROQUET NEWS

This past week Stanthorpe Croquet players were fortunate to be able to get on the court for two of the Croquet disciplines.

On Wednesday (2/11) a smaller than usual group braved the conditions to play Golf Croquet. Bev Sullivan played very well in her game against the pairing of Di Wren and Kathy Hopgood. Playing a solo hand Sullivan scored a hole-in-one but was narrowly beaten 11-9 by her opponents. In the second game it was Hopgood who played solo. Wren and Sullivan combined beautifully to win the game 13-9.

On Friday (5/11) the conditions were still not ideal but a group of six played a series of Gateball games.

Les Williams, Sharyn Roser and Cathy Fox won the toss and elected to play White balls in the opening two games against on Jenny Tunbridge, Joy Newman and Michael Fox (Reds).

Newman played very well in the opening game. She sparked a long ball for an Agari and her accurate shooting throughout the game helped her Red team to a good 16-10 win. Cathy Fox also played well. She scored hoop two with a long spark and was also very accurate throughout the game.

In game two the Red team once again proved too strong. Tunbridge and Michael Fox were both shooting and scoring with deadly accuracy. Newman also played very well. The White team did themselves no favours making some tactical errors as the Red team scored another win. The score 14-7. Michael Fox helped himself to an Agari.

In the final two games, Tunbridge, Newman and Heather Widderick played the White balls while Williams, Roser and Cathy Fox hoped for better luck playing Red balls.

Early in game the Reds took control of hoop three and played very well. At the end of the game the scores were nine all. The win eventually went to the White team after a countback.

In game four, Newman and Tunbridge were again playing their long shots with extreme accuracy which allowed the White team to seal another win – 14-7 with one Agari.

SUMMIT MIXED TRIPLES DECIDED

The Summit Bowls Club held the 2022 Club Mixed Bowls Triples last Saturday. The overcast and very windy conditions made it uncomfortable on the green and play tricky.

In the first Semi Final played Saturday morning Barry Murphy, Gaye Wilmot and Adrian Jackson played Sylean Fairley, Keith Mungall and Frank Taylor.

Frank’s team were hot out of the blocks and held a 13-nil lead after six ends.

Adrian Jackson’s team fought their way back into the game to trail 13-11 after twelve ends and the game looked to be in the balance.

Taylor’s team regrouped going on to win the game comfortably 25 shots to 12.

In the second Semi Final John Fairley, Pam Moore and Jamie Zamprogno played Margaret Harvey, Paul Zamprogno and Peter Ayerst.

The game was an arm wrestle in the early stages and after 10 ends the scores were locked at six all.

From this point, Peter Ayerst and his team gained momentum and went on to win the game 17-12.

The Final between Sylean Fairley, Keith Mungall and Frank Taylor played Margaret Harvey, Paul Zamprogno and Peter Ayerst was played on Saturday afternoon.

This is an extremely important meeting the outcome of which will have a big impact on the future of bowls in the area. Organisers are hoping for an excellent attendance.
