Waterways field day

A FIELD day focusing on best practice applications to construct, maintain and rehabilitate gullies and waterways will be held on Wednesday, 15 May.
Co-ordinated by the Condamine Headwaters Landcare Group, Soil Conservation Officer Mark Genrich from Queensland Murray Darling Committee shall be sharing his wealth of knowledge on gully erosion at three sites in the Freestone and Hermitage districts.
Scott and Emily Coy of 229 Shelleys Road, Freestone will host the first site visit at 8.30am.
“Intensive high rainfall events experienced in recent years have left many land managers with severe erosion damage. This field day will feature a number of site visits where practical solutions can be discussed on-site with the land manager,” said Landcare co-ordinator, Catherine Potter.
“We are very fortunate to be able to bring Mark to this district. Mark has worked as a Soil Conservation Officer on the Darling Downs for many years – he is a practical man who offers practical options for land managers to address their erosion issues,” Catherine said.
“Mark will explore available soil conservation rehabilitation options by considering each site and then make recommendations based on farm layout, cropping and/or grazing requirements and use of available machinery,” she said.
People have the option to attend all three sites or just the one closest to them. Site one will be at the Coys from 8.30am. At 11am the group will head to Ian Christensen’s, Nolan’s Road, Freestone, before hosts Dan and Jenny Redgen, Lyons Road, Hermitage share their story at 1pm. Local earthmoving contractor and Landcare member Rob Bondfield has suggested these sites for the variety of issues shown. This practical field day will offer technical advice that may be applicable on your property and I encourage anyone who has areas of on-farm soil erosion to attend at least one of the site visits. For more details or to RSVP, please contact Catherine at the Landcare Office on 4661 9909.
