INDEPENDENT Member for New England Tony Windsor made a special visit to the Rivertree mines smelting chimney 30km east of Liston recently.
Mr Windsor made the trip after local resident Jack Clarke invited him to discuss the region as a tourist attraction; as well as the need for improvements to road grading in the area.
Tenterfield Shire Councillor Blair Maxwell also attended on invitation of Mr Clarke.
Discussion took place around the tourism of the area, including singnage and road works to the chimney.
Cr Maxwell also discussed road maintenance of rural roads in the shire and has requested further funding for the area.
Meanwhile, the Stanthorpe Field Naturalists Club have announced a special visited the Rivertree mines and chimney on Sunday, 19 May.
The historically significant site retains remnants of the past mining industry, which is still visible today.
Of particular note is the chimney which was erected in 1895 to carry fumes from a silver smelter. Restoration work has bought it back to its former glory.
Anyone wanting to join the group can visit the website at: www.granitenet.com.au/groups/environment/fieldnats/
Meetings are on the forth Wednesday of each month at QCWA Rooms, Victoria Street, Stanthorpe, from 7.30pm.
