Former USQ Cougar Josh White and Kedron midfielder Samson Lowney are among the new recruits for the Warwick Redbacks AFL side as they plan their 2023 Darling Downs Australian Football season.

Redbacks coach Tyhe Clarkson said the club was looking good for 2023.

“We’ve secured a few a few big recruits for the upcoming season and returning players will help to bolster the side,” he said.

“Josh White has moved out this way from USQ Cougars in Toowoomba.

“He’s a big-bodied midfielder who is looking super fit.

“Samson Lowney is a super-fast midfielder with exceptional skills who played at Kedron last season. “Tom Allison is another recruit from Kedron. He is a full forward with a strong mark, great kick, and played two games for Warwick kicking five and six goals.”

Both Sam Lowney and Tom Allison have also been handy addition to the Warwick Redbacks cricket team over the past two seasons.

James McKendry, a “silky winger” who last played in the Redbacks 2014 Grand final

win as an 18-year-old.

Clarkson said the footy season was approaching quickly and the Redbacks were enjoying a strong pre-

season.

The 2023 Darling Downs AFL competition kicks off in April with the Anzac round.

Prior to the official start of the season, the Redbacks have a practice match against

Jimboomba on the 11 March. The afternoon home game for the annual Cardinal

Cup will kick off at 2.30pm.

While the senior footballers and getting back into the swing of things, Auskick and

the club’s Reddies Junior Footy starts this Friday at 430pm at WCU Oval.

The first session is a free “come and try”.

The Junior Reddies is a program for 8-12-year-olds who are ready to take the next

step in their AFL journey with drills to improve their basic skills and of course some

match play.

The Auskick program is quite different and is focused on Footy teaching kids

foundation skills and targets the younger generation.

Auskickers will be sent their packs when they register. The packs include their very

own footy and pump amongst other goodies.

Clarkson said his advice to any parent who is unsure of what the programs

involve or a potential player who is undecided was to “Come down to our come and try

session and we will guide you through our registration processes.”

Cost for the Junior Season is $100 and includes shorts guernsey and socks. Fairplay Vouchers are available or eligible participants. The sign on day this Friday (10.2) will run from 4.30-5.30pm.
