Tired of tyre problem

Illegal dumping of tyres is a perennial problem.

It’s the same tired old problem – tyres being dumped because people don’t want to pay the fee at the council rubbish dumps. Along the side of the road is a favourite spot, and nowhere more than on country roads.

Deputy Mayor Cr Ross Bartley drew attention to the fact that landowners who kept their frontages mowed were increasingly faced with the issue.

“They didn’t dump the tyres there – they’re just trying to tidy them up. The average landholder with a large frontage is getting sick of paying the costs to dump these tyres that have been illegally dumped there. In some cases it’s three of four tyres at a time,” he said.

“If they take them to the dump they’re charged for others’ illegal dumping. They’re asking what they should do with them because they didn’t dump them there; they’re just trying to tidy them up. It’s something we’ll have to deal with strategically, as a council, in the future.”
