TWILIGTH GAMES A WINNER

The unusually hot, steamy conditions last week had some of the regular Stanthorpe Bowlers searching for somewhere cooler rather than on the green at the Bowls Club. There were only a handful of Social games and three Championship games played.

In the first round clash of the 2023 Club Open B Grade Championships Bruno Stefanon defeated Robyn Smith by eight shots. The final score 21-13.

In the second game Gazza Trevena scored a very convincing 22-8 win over his opponent Jack Bell. Thanks to Peter Smith and Polly Lay there work marking the respective games.

The long overdue final of the 2022 Open B Grade Club Championship between up and coming bowlers Tom Hodgson and Peter Smith was also played and resulted in a narrow win to Hodgson. In a nail biting finish Hodgson kept his composure to win the final and the title 26 – 22. Congratulations to both players. Brian Brown did a great job marking the game.

On the social scene Basil Trollip and Peter Smith scored a 17-14 win over Wendy Hurnall and Brian Brown. In the first of two games of Triples all honours were with Noela Trollip, David Draper and Len Girgenti who scored a comfortable win 22-8 win over Colin Denning, Robyn Smith and Mick Mills. In the second game Colin Denning, Gazza Trevena and Jack Bell triumphed over Polly Lay, Dot Rankin and Rocky Thompson. The score 17-13.

While it has been too hot for many to play during the day, the weather has been perfect for Twilight Bowls and another good crowd of thirty bowlers hit the green last Thursday night. Roly Scopelliti’s team scored a 15-12 win over Bruno Stefanon’s team. Santo Cavallaro’s team triumphed over Len Leigh’s crew. Jack Bell’s team went down by five shots to Ray Weaver’s team. The score 14-9. The team by led Rocky Thompson proved too strong for Peter Smith and his team defeating them 18-10. In the final group, Len Girgenti’s team had a good win over Gazza Trevena’s team. The score 15 -8.

Twilight Bowls is on again tonight (Thursday 16/2) from 6.30pm at the Stanthorpe Bowls Club.

If you wish to play, please call the Club on (07) 46 811 276 on Thursday between 5.30pm and 6pm to register you name/s or be at the Club by 6pm to be slotted into a team.

ON THE COURT IN STANTHORPE

Three Croquet disciplines were played on the Stanthorpe Mallet Club courts last week.

On Tuesday (7/2) Association Croquet was played with only a small number of players on the court.

Pauline Smith and Joy Newman played against Sharyn Roser. Smith scored a peel on hoop one, while Roser scored one peel and two hoops in a row. Roser led by three hoops and thwarted attempts by Smith and Newman to use her balls to their advantage. The final score 14-10 in Favour of Sharon Roser. ended with a final score of 14 to 10 to Roser.

Two games of Golf Croquet were played on Thursday (9/2). In the opening game Judy Lock and Jennifer Gleadhill took on Pauline Inglis and Shirley Evans. Evans and Gleadhill each scored seven hoops apiece. Lock and Gleadhill went on to win the game 11-9.

In the second game Kim Steele and Liz Ellway played Shirley Evans and Bev Sullivan. Both Steele and Evans scored eight hoops. During the game Steele scored a spectacular jump shot (a strike that jumps the striker’s ball over another, scoring a hoop).

Steele and Ellway won the game 11-10. Shirley Evans played very well across both games without scoring a win.

This was Shirley Evans last day at the Stanthorpe Mallet Club as she moves on to new pastures.

The Gateball crew were on court last Friday (10/2).

In game one Jenny Tunbridge and Les Williams played Joy Newman, Pauline Smith and Sharon Roser. Tunbridge and Williams got off to a good start and lead throughout the game. Williams managed a bomb shot (a ball that is sitting close to the line, taken out with another ball shot from a spark strike. A spark is the technique of hitting another ball with your own while standing on both).

It is not easy but is a very effective method of taking out two opposition balls at the same time when it comes off. The final score was 11-8 in favour of Tunbridge and Williams.

In game two once again Newman, Smith and Roser struggled to find form against Tunbridge and Williams. Both Tunbridge and Williams scored two Agaris (pegging out the ball). The final score 14-8.

Again in game three Newman, Smith and Roser trailed Tunbridge and Williams, but managed to slow the scoring of their opponents. At the end of the game, they were outdone 12 – 8 with Tunbridge and Williams each scoring a bomb shot each and one Agari.

Newman, Smith and Roser finally found their form in the last game and turned things around to win 12-10.
