Mel McLennan relaxes after winning the Ladies Division One April medal on Saturday.

MIDWEEK CANCELLATIONS

The midweek ladies golf this past week in Warwick was disrupted when Huey sent down some serious rain.

More than 100mm fell on the Warwick course and that kept even the keenest of golfers home on the couch for the day. Unsurprisingly ladies’ competition and the Men’s Sporters events on Wednesday were cancelled.

There may have been some players who were disappointed, but the ducks were pleased and the course will certainly benefit from the downpour, as winter approaches.

Conditions were vastly improved on Saturday as the women teed off in the April Monthly Medal event sponsored Birdies Bar and Bistro

It was Melanie McLennan who took pole position in Division One with a good round of 76 nett.

Hot on her heel were Judy Lester and Jill Barnes with scores of nett77. After a countback Lester was declared runner up and Barnes settled for a place in the run down. Judy Lester also had her putter on song and win the Division 1 putting comp with 27 putts.

The Division run one run down went like this:- Di Johnston Annice Payne and Majella Kahler (79), Anna Cox (81), Danielle Seibel and Kath Devereux 85 and Gwen Mills.

Tub Ingall took the chocolates in Division two with a great score of nett 75. Michelle Wright was breathing down her neck after returning a god 76 nett. Michelle and her putter were also in sync, and she was successful in the Division Two putting comp. Wright needed only nine putts on the front nine and finished with 25 putts for the round.

The run down in division two went this way:- Roslyn Darton (78), Helen Olsen (79), Carole Brandon (80), Wendy Rhea (81), Maria Carey (83), Lyn McKillop, Ann Tomkins and Diane Evans (85) and Yvonne Pinington (86) .

This Saturday (Easter Saturday the ladies are playing a Single Stableford off the red Markers. The round sponsored by Brownlie Concreting who are thanked for their continued support in 2023.

On Sunday the second round of the Lane Cup is due to be played and judging by the players on the course last Sunday, the semi-finalists have been declared.

After the Easter weekend the ladies play a Single Stableford on Wednesday 12 April (sponsor Classic Dimensions).

Thursday 13 – Support the Sponsors Luncheon at One Table Café at Regency Park. If you plan to attend, please advise Wendy.

Finally some housekeeping: – To preserve the presentation of the fairways, please keep all buggies to the sides of the fairways, in the rough, as there is still quite a lot of water on the course and follow up rain is predicted. If that is the case the course may not dry out any time soon.

MARKER AND BACON BATES WINNERS

Sunday was a special day on the Sporters Calendar. The rescheduled Maureen Bates Memorial day drew a good field for the two person Ambrose once again sponsored by Rex Bates. A big thank you to Rex who not only sponsored the day but arranged the prizes for the multi-draw raffle and the trophies.

Scores were very close with a stroke and a fraction of a stroke separating the leaders.

The winners were Brendan Barker and Jason Bacon just ahead of Keith and Helen Jones who secured runner up prize. In third place, another mixed team, Filomena and Brad Silver, completed the prize winners.

With the back nine was in play, there were two pin shots on offer. Dick Hilton used his knowledge of the green to advantage and was closest to the pin at 12. Ivan Juriss did well to hit the green at 17 and claim that pin.

A multi draw raffle followed the presentation of prizes, with Rex donating a range of goodies for the day. Congratulations to the winners, prizes included wine, golf balls and personalised table mats with graphics of the orchids Rex grows. The last number drawn was for the major prize and was won by Lyn Ludlow.

No doubt Sporters will be busy next weekend chasing and consuming Easter eggs as a result regular Sporters will reconvene the following Sunday, 16 April. The start time is 8 am.

JURISS AND STUART LEAD THE WAY IN MEDAL EVENT

Members of the Stanthorpe Golf club played the April monthly medal and putting competition last Saturday and there was a good field on course for the round sponsored by club member Richard Reardon. Looking at the scores returned, it would appear that players fell into one of two categories, either quite good or struggle street. Not sure if the mid-week downpour contributed to the results.

Ivan Juriss was definitely among the first group. Juriss had a solid back nine – (38 hits) and returned an excellent winning score of 68 nett.

Shawn Yates also had a good round and his nett 69 secured runner up place.

Lisa Stuart returned to the winner’s podium leading the Ladies event with a nett 76. As with the men’s comp, Lisa’s 44 on the back nine was very good.

Christine Hood was also in the mix and her nett 78 was good enough to secure the ladies runner’s up.

Scott Constable had the best Gross Score in the men’s field (77) while Lisa Stuart claimed the daily double returning the Ladies best Gross (90) for the ladies.

Richard Reardon (the sponsor) won the men’s putting competition and Christine Hood the Ladies.

Dustin Steele, visiting from Meadowbrook GC claimed the Pin Shot at three. It was all about the Keiths at 12 and 17. Keith Jones winning 12 and Keith Barnett 17.

There were no takers for the Ladies pin at three however, Nikki Waterworth was successful at 12 and Lyn Ludlow at 17.

Dustin Steele also claimed the Pro Pin at 1/10. Matt Waterworth cleaned up the Pro Pins at 5/14 and 9/18. The Birdies nest at two went unclaimed.

The run down went to scores of nett 75 and better for the men and nett 79 and better for the ladies.

There are some big golf days at the end of the month and members should heed the early warning and arrange partners and teams. The club is our Kilcoy visitors will arrive for their annual Stanthorpe trek playing on the Saturday and the annual Black Toyota Ambrose event is on the Sunday.

In the meantime on Easter Saturday (8 April) club member Simon Shannon will be sponsoring the Single Stableford competition. There is a time sheet for this event on the board at clubhouse. Tee off for the afternoon session is from 11.30am.

NO FOOLING MONTHLY MEDAL WINNERS

April 1 might be April Fool’s Day but there was no joking on the golf course on Saturday as the Warwick members teed off in the April Monthly Medal round which was once again sponsored by John Dee.

The good field of 76 starters included visiting players from Gatton, Toowoomba and Wynnum.

Michael Hoskin won the A Grade with a great score of Nett 66 It was a similar scenario in the B Grade comepitition where Trevor King’s winning score was also nett 66. Both players survived a countback after a number of players finished strongly to land on nett 66 also.

LANGHAM SLASHERS A LITTLE COOL

The Langham slashers were out and about enjoying the distinctly brisker conditions on the Warwick Golf Course on Sunday morning. (12degrees I believe when the group teed off.

The back nine was in play and four groups played a Four (4)BBB competition.

Team Millard along with Peter Balfour and Chris Hall were the winners with a score of 30. Each received a $10 voucher.

Team Macbeth were the runners up – Doug Macbeth, Gerry Morrisey, Gary Teunis and Bert Bownds. Their score 31.25.

There were takers for the NTP’s at the 11th and 16th. the poor form was put squarely down to the cooler weather. Not sure what they are going to do when we get to winter.

Mark Simmonds had no such issues when it came to the 13th which was his domain alone.

This Sunday is Easter Sunday and as a result there will be no Langham Slashers competition. However I believe there may be quite a few regulars who will be having a social hit on Sun day morning.

If you are interested in joining the Langham Slashers for an enjoyable round of social golf on a regular basis on a Sunday morning, please contact 0408 949 979 or simply front up to their next game on Sunday 16 April and join this fun group. Tee off is at 6.30am.
