Making a difference in someone else’s life has never been so uplifting.

Last year, the Days for Girls charity’s Allora group raffled an air experience flight that was donated by the Warwick Gliding Club and in November the winner took a friend up for the rather heady experience.

The club has donated a similar prize for several years, and it has been a great fundraiser for the group.

But now it’s time to get back down to earth, because the group will meet on Monday (24 April) to pack kits for women in Vanuatu. Kits are also being packed for Timor Leste as part of a Rotary project there in May.

The Vanuatu target is 100 kits, so members will be hopping – or at least, sewing as fast as they can to meet the lofty target.

Days for Girls is an international organisation that has created a sustainable solution to help women around the world manage menstruation effectively. Many girls and women – up to 500 million worldwide – do not have what they need to manage their periods. They have to miss school or work at those times. It’s called period poverty.

People don’t need to be members of Days for Girls to be able to help. Businesses can display an Allora DfG container for cash donations, people can give money or donate items including (all new) ladies’ knickers, hotel-style soaps, face washers, flannelette and non-stretch cotton.

Each kit that is prepared includes absorbent liners, waterproof shields, carry pouch for washing, soap, panties and a washcloth. It is all packed, with a visual instructions sheet, into a drawstring bag.

Donationed items can be dropped into Allora True Value Hardware store, Cassaz Colourful Curls Allora or Bryson’s Florist Warwick (marked clearly, Days for Girls) then people should email alloraqld@daysforgirls.org or text 0434 907 904 with the details so someone can pick up your donation. Or drop it in to the gathering in Allora.

The group’s sewing and packing day will be held at the Function Room, MacKillop House, Warwick St, Allora, next to St Patrick’s Church, entry via McKillop Lane. (Parking is in Warwick Street.)

People don’t need to be able to get to the gathering to help. Some people like to sew at home for the project.
