Have your say on safer local roads

This is your chance to have your say on roads in your area: the Southern Downs Regional Council is calling for residents to give feedback on black spot areas and other locations of concern on the roads of the region.

But you’ll have to hurry. You only have until 7 June to send in your thoughts on high risk roads and intersections.

Mayor Councillor Vic Pennisi said that targetting black spots for upgrades was a vital part of building better, safer roads.

“Our community knows our local roads best and I encourage residents to submit areas of concern for funding consideration,” he said.

Council will apply to address traffic areas of concern through the Australian Government’s 2023-25 Black Spot Program and will submit specific projects for approval following the community feedback.

If approved by the Federal Government, a project is then administered through the Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads.

Under its funding criteria, the Government classifies black spots as either reactive or proactive: reactive sites are roads or intersections that have a crash history and proactive sites are ones that are considered potentially hazardous.

Some program funds may be approved to treat sites where road traffic engineers have completed a Road Safety Audit and found that remedial work is necessary so proactive safety works can be undertaken before casualties occur.

Black Spot projects that meet the funding criteria include safety works such as improving sight distances, improving curves, removing road side hazards, increasing safety at intersections and providing protection to pedestrians.

Community feedback can be sent in online to www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/living-here/have-your-say or by email to mail@sdrc.qld.gov.au.
