The final rounds of the Stanthorpe Golf Championships were played on Saturday and Sunday.

There were three grades in both men’s and ladies and also Vets and Junior divisions so there were no shortage of winners to collect their trophies from sponsors Greg Carey and Maria Carey.

Grade gross score winners were Lisa Stuart ‘A’ grade; Lyn Ludlow ‘B’ grade and Lorraine Evans, ‘C’ grade. Helen Jones won the Ladies Vets.

There was some very competitive play in the final round of the Men’s event. In the end, there can be only one Club Champion and in 2023 that is Matt Waterworth.

It is not Waterworth’s first title win but it is a number of years since he took out the title. Club captain, Brad Silver finished with the Best Nett score after four rounds of play.

Saturday’s round was kindly sponsored by Chris Fittock Plumbing and Gas.

Conditions on Sunday were difficult. It was a quite cold and despite the fine and sunny morning conditions deteriorated giving way to a cloudy and unpredictable windy day. Recently endorsed club captain, Brad Silver, shot the winning score of nett 72 in the men’s division. Runner up was with a good round of nett 73 was barry Hughes.

Nikki Waterworth was the best of the ladies. She finished the round with a good score of 75 to win the ladies’ section. Helen Jones (nett 80) was the runner up.

With the Singles championships done and dusted it might be time for Club members to turn their attention to club championships yet to be played.

The men’s, ladies’ and mixed foursome are coming up later in the year.

In the meantime Saturday is the final round of the month. The Medley 4BBB Stableford will be sponsored by club members, Lisa Stuart and David Stuart. It is a shot gun start at noon and there us a time sheet on the board at the club for players to nominate their spot in the event.

Three of the Warwick Men’s Pennant’s team wrapped up the 2023 Pennant season last Sunday. Warwick teams were successful in three of the eight Darling Downs Golf Association Pennant Divisions.

In a strong showing Warwick teams won the Division Two, Senior B and Handicap South competitions.

Congratulations to all players. The 2023 Pennant season was once again a tough competition, and the finals were played in very tough conditions.

COOPER WINS STABLEFORD WITH GOOD SCORE

Sharron Cooper scored a great win in the Warwick ladies the mid-week Single Stableford last Wednesday (17/5). Her score of 37 points good enough to win the prize kindly donated by Lyn from Bryson’s Place, Florist and Gifts and it was also a nice result for the Shootout board. The big field was joined by visitors from the City Golf club in Toowoomba.

Melanie McLennan continued her good form to take out he runner’s up spot but not before a countback with Patti Hemmings after both players returned a handy 35 points. The rundown went to scores of 30 and better :- Judy Lester and Mary Young (34), Gwen Mills (33), Lois Wilson (32), Anne Lyons (31), and Tub Ingall (30).

Scores for the remainder of the field were :- Anne-Louise Kelly from City Golf club and Di Johnston (30), Vicki Bennet (29), Liz Cockram, Janine Stewart 28 and Roslyn Darton (28), Cheryl Matsen, also from City (27), Narelle Norris, Yvonne Pinington and Helen Olsen (26), Ann Tomkins and Jan Aspinall (25), Lyn McKillop (22) and Carole Brandon (21).

The pro pin was shared between Narelle Norris, Melanie McLennan, and Cheryl Matsen. Patti Hemmings had the best score on the front nine (18).

LADIES PLAY TO QUALIFY FOR J D ROWLAND

On Saturday a large field of ladies teed off hoping to qualify for the final of one of the Club’s prestigious honour board events, The J D Rowland.

The J D Rowland title is a gross event, Saturday’s event was a nett trophy.

Mary Young and Judy Lester were the winners on countback from Melanie McLennan and Jill Barnes. The best nett 72. Balls in the rundown went to Michelle Wright and Gwen Mills (74.5); Anne Lyons and Trish Bell (78) and Liz Cockram and Narelle Norris (79.5). The pro pin was shared between Liz Cockram, Narelle Norris, Dianne Evans and Dian MacDonald.

Remaining scores were:- Ellie Casey (Welcome back Ellie!), and Yvonne Pinington (80), Di Johnston and Sharron Cooper (82), Majella Kahler and Janine Stewart (82), Carole Brandon and Roslyn Darton (84), Dianne Evans and Dian MacDonald (85), Ann Tomkins and Kath Devereux (90).

The qualifying teams, Melanie McLennan and Jill Barnes, Judy Lester and Mary Young, Liz Cockram and Narelle Norris, and Michelle Wright and Gwen Mills played the semi-final round of the J D Rowland on Sunday.

Melanie and Jill proved too good for Michelle and Gwen, taking the match on the 14th hole 6/4. Gwen and Michelle played consistent golf, but not good enough to beat the barrage of birdies Jill and Melanie were scoring.

In the second semi Mary and Judy played consistent golf. The pair parred not of the par three holes to keep themselves in the game making Liz and Narelle work hard. Liz and Narelle were the eventual winners. Even a ball in the ditch wasn’t enough to dampen their spirits.

Melanie McLennan and Jill Barnes will tee off on Sunday against Liz Cockram and Narelle Norris in the JD Rowland final round.

Tomorrow (Friday), the Warwick Women’s Pennant team play Pittsworth and City. We wish them all well, as they continue their great start to the Pennant Season.

This Saturday the Ladies will play a single Stableford followed by the final of the JD Rowland Matchplay Honour board Event on Sunday.

The mid-week round on Wednesday (31/5) May 31 is another Single Stableford sponsored by The Cherry Tree Coffee and Dining.

A BUNCH OF FIVES MIDWEEK

Golfers have been forced to face all types of weather recently and after much needed rain early last week the field of 60 faced a fairly sodden track for the Midweek Sporters round on Wednesday (17/9).

A lack of run on scores were quite modest. Continuing the run of five for the month of May, five players returned the top score of 35 points.

After the count back it was Grant Ollerton who came out on top ahead of runner up Geoff Lee. David Hynes, Mal Crawford and Darrell Bain each received a ball in the run down.

Believe it or not there were also five players on 34 points who also received a ball each. This quintet included Trevor Malone, Wayne Foster, Jesse Ollerton, Danny Lyons and Ray Dudley.

Unfortunately the fivesomes ended their and there were only four players on 33 points fighting for the final two points in the rundown. After the countback it came to Evan Pfeffer and Don Iedema to round out the run down.

No fives at the Pro pin. Collecting the cash at the 13th were Josh Manwaring ($30), Garry Adcock added $25 to his Melbourne Cup account (he assured all who want to listen he knows the winner at this early stage) and Evan Pfeffer ($15).

Nearest the pins, were Paul “Cattle Baron” Dautzenberg at the fifth, Geoff Lee (seventh) and Don Stewart (Ninth). The 11th belonged to Charlie Morrison and Daffy Hynes held the 16th.

After a recent golf lesson, Troy asked Rick Mills to call into the shop, and he would give him a little something that would benefit his game.

It was the number for the Southern Downs Bowls Club. (Subtle or Harsh?).
