Inglewood take first BRL trophy of the year

The Inglewood Rooster and Texas Terriers went head-to-head in the 2023 Border Rugby League President’s cup at the weekend in a rematch of the 2022 grand final with Inglewood taking the trophy 34-10.

The Roosters have been front-runners since the beginning of this season and on Saturday exacted their revenge for the grand final loss the comprehensive win over the Terriers.

Roosters centre Brent Hearne starred scoring three tries in the first half – in what proved to be a match winning performance.

Inglewood led 10-4 early thanks to two quick tries to Hearn and the score remained unchanged until a successful penalty conversion by Hearne.

He scored his third try from the kick-off, scampering down the left side and running 60metres to give the Roosters an 18-4 half time advantage.

Texas scored in the first minute of the second half and tried valiantly to get back into the game however the Roosters had their measure at every turn.

Tries to Connor Clancy and Jonathon Robinson extended the lead further before winger Jack Bourchier drove the final nail in the Texas coffin when he scored with 14 minutes remaining taking the led to 34-4.

Jason Bahnisch scored a consolation try for Texas which Sweedman converted, but the game was never in doubt. The final score 34-10.

Jae Andrew, Thomas Kidston, Connor Clancy and Brent Osborne played very well for the Roosters. Beau Anderson looked dangerous when he got the ball for Texas.

Hearne was named Player of the match by the Obee Call team from Toowoomba who covered the game live.

The roosters also scored a big win in the Ladies League tag game winning 36-0.

In other BRL games Stanthorpe defeated MacIntyre Warriors 40-16 and Tenterfield defeated the Eastern Suburb Hornets 36-30

The Stanthorpe Ladies League tag team were defeated 12-0 by McIntyre and the Tenterfield ladies continued their winning run with another sweeping 46-6 win over McIntyre.

In Round seven his weekend Tenterfield host Texas; the Hornets and host McIntyre and the Gremlins host Inglewood.
