Southern Downs Regional Council’s waste education warrior, Sort-It Sally, is leading the charge in combating the issue of illegal dumping and calling on residents to join the fight. With over 30 wheelie bins’ worth of rubbish illegally dumped each month across the region.
Sort-It Sally emphasises that reporting instances of illegal dumping is not only about being a good community citizen but also about ensuring that ratepayer dollars are not wasted on avoidable clean-up bills. The act of illegal dumping not only tarnishes the pristine environment of the region but also poses significant environmental, health, and safety hazards.
“Illegal dumping is messy, unsightly and wrong! It presents serious environmental, health and safety impacts by polluting our region’s pristine environment and making our picturesque landscape look untidy and uncared for,” Sort-It Sally said.
“Illegal dumping also is a considerable financial and resource burden for Council, businesses and the community.”
Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi echoes these sentiments, highlighting that tackling illegal dumping diverts resources from more critical and beneficial community projects. The financial and time costs associated with cleaning up dumped waste could otherwise be directed towards improving community services and amenities.
“Let’s put a stop to roadside littering and illegal dumping. Let’s see it, report it, and stop it,” Cr Pennisi said.
Littering refers to the unlawful deposit of less than 200 litres of waste, while illegal dumping pertains to the unlawful deposit of 200 litres or more.
The Council’s Regulatory Services Team has assigned a dedicated officer to investigate illegal dumping cases across the region.
However, if anyone witnesses littering or illegal dumping incidents, they are urged to contact Council on 1300 697 372 to report the offence. Penalties may be imposed on alleged offenders if there is sufficient information to identify them.
