It was a ‘no brainer’ for the Warwick Boys Brigade when they were asked about raising funds for brain cancer.

The company had been touched by the terrible disease when one of their treasured leaders, Alan Cruickshank, passed away last October a short time after being diagnosed with brain cancer.

Alan’s death was the second time the boys had experienced a brain cancer fatal in their midst when, in December 2022, the mother of two of the boys, Lyla Edwards passed away from brain cancer.

Following a suggestion by brigade captain Jason Skinner, the boys unanimously backed the proposal to raise funds for the Mark Hughes Foundations (MHF) to help with research into the disease.

Mr Skinner said almost all the boys had bought MHF beanies and their donation box had been well supported by the boys, their parents and other supporters.

“Once we spoke about brain cancer and how it had taken two people closely connected to Boys Brigade in Warwick, it was not an issue to have all the boys involved,” he said.

“They’ve taken to the project full on.”

The MHF was started in 2014 after NRL star Mark Hughes was diagnosed with brain cancer and since then, the foundation has sold more than one million fund-raising beanies, raised tens of millions of dollars for brain cancer research and funded Brain Cancer Care nurses in regional Australia.

While the funding has assisted with research for a cure or better treatment of brain cancer, deaths from the disease throughout Australia have dropped little more than one percent in the past 10 years.

MHF beanies are available at Lowes Menswear in the Rose city Shoppingworld and at IGA in Warwick with all money raised going to brain cancer research.
