Stanthorpe’s St Joseph’s School is the Queensland school orienteering champions following the schools championships in Brisbane.

St Joseph’s marketing officer Julie-Ann Spiller said it was a highly successful weekend for the school and the region.

She said the school had sent 12 students to compete as part of the Darling Downs regional team.

“Overall, Darling Downs was the champion region and St Joseph’s School was the first placed school,” she said.

“During the championships competitors compete in three events – a sprint (a quick event in an urban environment), a hagaby (a mass start, one-person relay in the bush), and a long-distance course (in the bush).

“Orienteering challenges competitors both physically and mentally, and takes a fair bit of courage to battle through the events.

“Our students all performed very well.

“Liam O’Dea placed second and third in two events, Patrick Moxham third in one event, and a number of others placed 4th or 5th in events (Patrick Moxham, Ned Robinson, Amity Buscher and Erin O’Dea). Sasha Kendall placed first in the Girl’s Division Two Long Distance event and Kayleb Spiller second in Boy’s Division Two Long Distance event.

“Great work by Mr Allan Lahey to get so many students involved in orienteering at the school. It has been an excellent weekend of competition by the students in a very challenging sport.”
