Stanthorpe claims title

Max Balfour and Marion Skaines won the Social Bowls Competition at Warwick Bowls Club on Saturday, 31 August.

A Stanthorpe bowls team has taken out the Southern Cross Triples day held on 28 August.

The team consisting of Brian Brown, Len Girgenti and Gary Trevena travelled to Southern Cross Bowls Club in Warwick and began slowly.

Taking on Warwick East they started slowly but managed to regain their composure in the second half of the game to win comfortably by 22 shots to 11, and also end up with the best margin to win the day and the $300 prize money on offer.

Social Bowls was a little quiet this week with some of the members away for various reasons. Results of the games are as follows.

In a close encounter, Caroline Draper, Lorraine Evans and David Draper (16) defeated Margaret Harvey, Colin Denning and Brian Biddle (15). Sylean Fairley, David Draper and Brian Brown were defeated by the team of Colin Denning, D.Draper and John Fairley by 8 shots to 15 and in a lop sided affair Brian Biddle, J.Alford and Gary Trevena defeated Caroline Draper, R.Alford and Jack Bell by 31 shots to 11.

Congratulations to the Southern Downs District Committee for allowing women to play in this years District Pennants Competition for the first time. The change to mixed teams was suggested some years ago at a District meeting but received some very strong opposition from one of the District Committee members, stating that Pennants had been a male competition for around 100 years and it would remain that way.

Some of the smaller Clubs have struggled in the past to enter teams in the event due to lack of numbers. With the inclusion of the Ladies in the competition, the problem has now been solved. Great to see the District show some initiative and change with the times. Our next ‘Turkey Triples’ day will be held on Tuesday September 9.

Fourteen teams have nominated for the event so here’s hoping that the weather is kind to us as we have been forced to cancel the last two events, due to the inclement weather.

The green Sponsors for this week are David and Amanda Smith of J.S.I. Motorcycles situated at Sullivan Drive on the Industrial Estate (2) in Stanthorpe.
