Environmental flair

The Southern Downs Regional Council has unanimously voted to approve a gas flaring project at Warwick landfill for converting methane gas to carbon dioxide.

The decision was made at the council’s September ordinary meeting and was hailed by Mayor Melissa Hamilton as a positive project that would not only deal with an issue at no cost to council but also potentially give an income stream from royalties.

Cr Joel Richters commended the use for a site that would otherwise not have a purpose.

“It’s great that we’re being innovative,” he said.

“Even though I don’t suspect the revenue is substantial, we are being environmentally aware.”

The council will enter into a contract with LGI Limited to install a system at the Warwick landfill. The opportunity for revenue is through a share of Australian Carbon Credit Units (ACCUs) in a progressive royalty schedule. The contract has expansion opportunities based on the assessment of feasibility to include landfill gas flaring at Stanthorpe landfill should the Warwick project be financially viable.
