Warwick Women golfers have taken out the Zone One Open Pennants this title this year.

After adding five points to their total at Gatton on 18 September, it gave them a cumulative total for the year of 70 points – enough to secure the title.

“Thank you to all who have contributed to this great result,” Warwick women’s golf spokes person Michell Wright said.

“ I think the job of choosing three players per represented game, was certainly a daunting task, but one that our selectors certainly seemed to get right, as Team Warwick managed to average seven points per round.

“The overall points totals were…. Warwick 70, Goombungee 60, Toowoomba 48, Cabarlah 46, city 44, Gatton 43, Pittsworth 41, Oakey 39, and Clifton 21.

“Team Warwick is looking forward to competing in the Zone Pennant Final in Gatton next year. “This will take the form of a 36 hole event.”

There were certainly some hot scores on Wednesday 25 September, with Anne Lyons and Yvonne Pinington etching their names onto the finalists list on the Medallists board.

Each finalist qualifies to play in the Medal of Medalists Final to be played in December.

Lyons secured her win with a five stroke buffer anyone would be happy to have – a fine 66 nett to win Division One very convincingly. Playing really well on the front nine, but having a blinder on the back. Narelle Norris was the runner up for division one, with 71 nett, on a countback from Melanie McLennan. Norris also took home the putting prize for her division, only requiring 27 putts for her round.

Yvonne Pinington had a great day on the greens as well, securing her win with a 70 nett, three shots better than her closest opponent Carole Brandon who scored 73 nett. Maria Carey has continued her good form, winning the Division Two putting with 31 putts.

The Pro pin was won by Jill Barnes, and shared with Judy Lester, Ann , and Narelle. The approaches were won by Judy and Melanie in Division One, and Donna Keogh and Maria Carey in Division Two.

Saturday saw the heavens open up and sent down some well needed rain which kept all of the golfers at home.

Saturday the 5 October, the Warwick Women will play The Monthly Medal, Wednesday 9 October will be a Single Stableford, and also is the Oakey Pink Day Invitational.

Stanthorpe Golf

Welcome to Scotland. Saturday’s golf started with wind, rain and freezing cold – what more could any golfer want? Scotland here in Stanthorpe.

The day’s play was a Canadian Foursome. To the uninitiated this form of the game is crazy. To the initiated it is still crazy. However the point is it is done each year to remember someone very special to the club Peter Howard. It is a special day of golf sponsored by Mal, Fred and Terry Howard in memory of their father Peter Howard. Along with generous prize money is a trophy. Readers, of some antiquity, may remember Howard’s and Mitre 10, Howard’s Builder’s Hardware, and Howard’s sawmills at the Summit and Warwick. Peter Howard was a great supporter of the club and it is a privilege to remember his contribution to the town and to golf.

Men’s: Congratulations to Jason Bacon and Brendan Barker first place and in hot pursuit was that incorrigible father and son duo of Brent and Jarrod Irwin. Pins went to Hayden Smith, Todd Beckett, Jason Bacon, Brendan Barker, Mark Richards and Greg Fraser. Mention should also be made of Gary Kirby who drove the ball from the first tee to within 40 metres of the green.

The Ladies Golf was also a Canadian Foursome. This competition was sponsored by Mei Bell. Bell is a great ambassador for the game of golf and specialises in turning miserable non golfing ladies into really happy golfing ladies. For those ladies who would love to learn and start playing golf – Bell is the lady to know. Simply contact the club she will get you started in no time.

Congratulations to the birthday girl, Nikki Waterworth and Lynette Ludlow. Second place went to Neta Thouard and Lisa Stuart. Pins went to Linda Kelly and Lynette Ludlow.

Next weeks game is sponsored by Michael Lane.
