Stay safe in October

TAKE special care at work in October – it’s Safe Work Australia Month.
Safe Work Australia Chair, Ann Sherry AO has called for workers across Australia to raise awareness of work health and safety.
“The theme of safety month this year is Safety is a frame of mind. Get the picture,” said Ms Sherry.
During October all workers are asked to think about their reason for staying safe at work.
“For the first time a month is being held this year to celebrate work health and safety,” said Ms Sherry.
Workers are urged to register as a Safety Ambassador and hold an activity in their workplace or attend an event hosted by your work health and safety regulator.
“Safe working environments are critical for good business in Australia. Change in workplaces happens because individuals care,” said Ms Sherry.
“Raising awareness and encouraging people to speak up about hazards not only improves the safety culture within your organisation but can actually save lives.”
There are already 582 registered Safety Ambassadors who will be holding activities across Australia this month to raise awareness of work health and safety.
Registered Safety Ambassadors are also eligible to enter the Safety Ambassador of the Year Award for 2013. Registrations close this Friday 4 October so get your entry in for a chance at receiving national recognition for your work.
“118 work-related deaths have been reported in the media so far this year,” said Ms Sherry.“I encourage individuals and organisations to get behind safety month and help reduce this tragic figure.
“Safe Work Australia Month is an opportunity for us all to get involved and gain the many benefits of a strong safety culture.”
