The Bridge Club has received the sad news of the death of Judy Mobbs on 11 June. Only two days before she helped her team to win first place after the first round of the local heat of the Grand National Open Teams. Judy had been a loyal member of the club since 2004. As President from 2007 to 2009 she presided over the move from the Band Centre to the former Scout Hut in Victoria Park. Under her leadership, members of the club raised $43,000 to help pay for renovations. Grants were also gained for an air-conditioning system, a new kitchen and all the other items required for a fully equipped venue. Judy was one of our keenest members and will be sorely missed.

On Board 2 on 9 June, Judy (North) showed sound judgment in both play and bidding. In response to South’s opening bid of 1C many players would have responded 1D. Judy, however, saw the value of a longer suit and replied 1S. When Sue Goddard (South) supported spades the value of North’s singleton made 4S a sensible bid. Against 4S by North, East led the helpful three of hearts, which was run around to North’s eight. On deals like this it is important to get rid of the defenders’ trumps as soon as possible. With the heart finesse marked, Judy lost only two tricks. Had the defenders taken their three tricks, two spades and one club, the result would still have been very good, as the result at the other table was 3S making nine for 140 against Judy’s 420.

Results, Monday, 09/06/25 (4-table GNOT heat) J. Mobbs, S. Goddard, T. Hinde L. Don (59 IMPs) 1; N. Collins, M. Simpson, W. Milne J. Sipple (46 IMPs) 2. Friday, 13/06/25 (4-table Mitchell): N/S N. Bonnell J. Rose (64.3) 1; N. Collins M. Simpson (54.2) 2. E.W W. Milne J. Sipple (58.9) 1; D. Dawes C. Hall (51.2) 2.
