Assumption College students have been involved in exciting and valuable outdoor and reflection experiences in recent weeks.
These opportunities are an important part of the College’s Pastoral and Wellbeing program, as they are designed to ensure the individual student’s development through challenge, support, and fun.
Year 8 students from Assumption College attended the Camp Kokoda outdoor education camp in the mountains overlooking Maroon Dam.
The students spent four days trekking through the bush, climbing mountains and scaling rocky hills, while carrying their back packs and food to cook their own campfire meals. In doing so, students learned about the Kokoda spirit from the Kokoda track in WWII and participated in activities such as abseiling, high ropes, giant swing, canoeing and flying fox.
During the camp and through their immersion in these activities, they learnt about the four valuable pillars of Endurance, Mateship, Courage and Sacrifice. The students had an amazing time and returned home with stories and friendships forged by resilience and experiences that they would have otherwise never had.
Year 12 students, nearing the end of their senior schooling, gathered and took a break from the rigour of their studies to connect with each other and reflect on their learning journey. The Year 12 retreat was an opportunity for the graduating students to enjoy uninterrupted time with their peers and teachers, and engage in sessions and activities that were focussed on reflection, connection, and signals the move from student to alumni.
The retreat took students back to basics within nature, and they participated in presentations about journey and self-reflection, as well as activities that afforded each young adult the opportunity to thrive as an individual supported by a nurturing community.
These young adults enjoyed the opportunity to take a deep breath and connect before heading into the challenge of external examinations, work commitments, and life beyond school.
