Allora Days for Girls start busy year

The new year started on high note for the Allora and District Days for Girls organisation with 240 kits despatched on 10 January as part of a larger Australia commitment to the Sedan.

The organisation which puts together menstrual health packs for women and girls around the world was formed in in 2008 when founder, Celeste Mergens, was working with a foundation in Kenya assisting an orphanage in the outskirts of Nairobi. The group now has members around the world including the Allora group.

As well as starting with the packing day on 10 January they have had busy start to the year.

A gathering on 13 January saw them put together their wheelbarrow of goods plus additional prizes for our main fundraising effort for the year as part of the Allora Heritage weekend.

The group will sell raffle tickets for the multi-draw raffle from 6am on Saturday with the prizes being drawn between 2 -230pm.

The sellers will be located off the thorough fair near the loading ramp as well as in the old canteen and there will be roving sellers as well.

The next gathering will be held on 27 January with a variety of jobs to be done.

As usual there are jobs for sewers and non-sewers alike.

Even if you can’t attend their monthly gatherings, there is certainly sewing which can be completed at home.

Please contact one of the executive team for further details if this is of interest to you.

The fundraising initiative Allora DfG “Container for Cash’ account has had several donations so far. People and businesses may like to use the code ‘C10749279’ when depositing their eligible containers and the refund will be directly deposited into the Allora DfG account.

Please contact Kaylene via the Allora DfG email if you would like containers to be collected or they can be brought along or dropped off at any monthly gathering.

As always, the group is requesting donations of: new ladies knickers, small hotel style soaps, new face washers, new 100 per cent cotton (non-stretch) material or monetary donations so please think of us, if you are doing a cupboard clean out.

Items can be dropped into Allora True Value Hardware store, Cassaz Colourful Curls Allora or Bryson’s Florist Warwick marked as Days for Girls. If dropping items in please text, phone or email contacts below so that we know to pick things up as not all executive members live in town. Monetary donations over $2 are tax deductable and can be transferred to: Allora Days for Girls, BSB 064032 Acc: 10127292. Items can also be dropped off at gathering times.

Gatherings for this year will continue on the final Friday of the month.

Please bring along something for morning tea. Gatherings are held at the Function Room, MacKillop House, Warwick St, Allora, next to St Patricks Church, entry via McKillop Lane. Please park in Warwick Street. Thank you to the church council for the use of the building. Coffee and tea provided.

Thank you – Allora and district Days for Girls Executive team – Heather Goonan Mobile-0434907904, Lenore Wissemann Mobile 0428973432, Shirley Cornhill and Kaylene Williams or email: alloraqld@daysforgirls.org
