Exploring monochrome this month

The Allora Photography Group turned its creative focus to Monochrome for November, inviting members to explore the depth and artistry of single-colour photography.

While monochrome is often synonymous with black and white, it also encompasses varying tones of a single hue, such as red fading to pale pink. Most members, however, opted for the classic grayscale palette.

Michelle C took a bold approach, transforming her black-and-white image into a negative effect. The result was a striking composition titled Spotlighting, which earned an Honour. Judge John Stewart praised the piece, saying, “It’s a simple yet effective image with the trees contrasting with, and being balanced by, the boulders on the right. The black sky works very effectively to make the trees and rocks stand out. Well done for trying something different.”

Gale’s atmospheric piece, Misty Trees, received a Merit. Framed by two large foreground trees, the misty light softened distractions in the background, creating a serene and moody scene. Judge John suggested that the remnant of a barbed wire fence along the bottom of the frame could be removed to enhance the composition further.

Bob earned a Merit for his nighttime capture of the Milky Way over Lake Leslie. His image cleverly combined a dramatic star field with a sliver of lake, illuminated by torchlight or headlights, grounding the celestial scene. Judge John commended Bob’s ambitious choice of subject, noting the difficulty in capturing such a dynamic scene.

Sally employed the solarisation technique to create a dramatic seascape titled Grey Day on Bribie. Her image depicted threatening skies over a tranquil boat scene, with the distant Glasshouse Mountains standing timelessly on the horizon. The creative use of tone reversal earned her a Merit.

The group’s final topic for the year is Continuum, defined as a series of four related images that tell a story over time. This theme will wrap up what has been an engaging year for the Allora Photography Group, which has embraced significant changes, including launching its website as part of the MyPhotoClub network and adopting a rubric scoring system for member grading.

The group will celebrate the year’s end with a breakup dinner on Wednesday, 11 December.
