BIG HITTING BURGESS A SPORTERS WINNER

Stanthorpe Sporters were out and about on the back nine of the Stanthorpe Golf course on Sunday for their regular nine hole event.

It was great to see several familiar faces returning after an extended holiday break.

Andrew Burgess is a player who hits the ball a long way and it was certainly an asset last Sunday helping him to the winning score of nett 24.

However, it was not a one sided result. Burgess had to survive a cut of the cards as Angelo Maugeri and John Rawlings also returned nett 24. In the wash up Burgess was named the winner, Angelo Maugeri the runner up and John Rawlings relegated collected a run down.

Paul Armstrong had another fine round scoring 38 off the stick to claim bragging rights for gross score on the day. Another example of Armstrong’s consistency.

There were two pin shots on offer. Par three specialist, Terry Byrnes had success at the 12th and collected the wobbly ball prize and can now use his personalised ball marker to mark his spot on the green.

The remaining pin shot at 17 was won by the overall winner Burgess. Ironically it was perhaps his worst hit of the day. He almost missed the tee shot but plenty of top spin saw the ball run the length of the fairway, up onto the green finishing only a couple of metres from the pin. Burgess missed the putt for birdie and settle for par and the NTP.

Sporters will be back on course next Sunday playing the front nine. Tee off is from 8am and there is an open invitation for anyone to join the fun.

TURKEY TRIPLES DRAWS BIG CROWD

The Southern Cross Bowls Club hosted their first Turkey Triples comepitition of the year last week. The green was running beautifully, and the eight rinks were filled to capacity and 48 bowlers enjoyed a great day.

Organisers wish to thank those bowlers who travelled from Stanthorpe, The Summit, Tannymorel and Clifton clubs as well as Warwick and Warwick East.

When the breeze dropped during the day you could really feel the heat from the sun but the heat of play was there all day but was mixed with plenty of fun and laughter.

The Games Director, Clark Davidson did such a great job organising the teams that he left himself in reserve and didn’t get a game. He wandered about in the background giving support and cheek in equal amounts.

After an excellent day on the green the winners, Matty Shepherd, Lorna Tucker and Margaret Grayson heir prizemoney which was presented by Matt Hardy from sponsor Matt’s Mowers & More.

The runners-up were Geoff Creighton, Danny Hughes and Marion Skaines while Cheryl Wickham, Dave Scotney and Daphne Cross received the Encouragement Award. Incidentally they also finished in third place.

Lucky “numbers” raffle prizes were won by Robyn Griffith and Val Gray. The raffle “ticket” winners were Peter Ridgewell, Carl Sutherland, Max Balfour, Daryl Busch and Pat Gainey.

A special thank ass always to the volunteers who made the day happen.

As always, thanks went to all that volunteers that made it happen.

Last Sunday four rinks of bowlers played crazy pairs. Losing teams moved on after the first 10 ends to play another team. There was not one person who went crazy, but some teams might have gone close judging by the scores.

Congratulations to the winners (highest score) Gordon Assay and Wayne Foster.

Daryl Bush was not at the club to claim his win in the member’s draw, and it has n jackpotted to $120 but remember you can’t win if you’re not at the club.

Nominations are now being taken for the Club’s A & B Grade Men’s Singles. The “B” Grade games will be played on 4/5 February and the “A” grade on the 18/19 February

FOUNDATION CUP WINNERS

On Saturday Stanthorpe golfers played a stroke event which was also the second round of the Foundation Cups.

History tells us that leading after round one is a distinct advantage in the Foundation Cup and Ron Batterham took full advantage of his position coming into the second round in the men’s event. Batterham went on to add his name to the list of winners of the Men’s Foundation Cup however he did not have everything his own way. A countback was necessary to determine the overall winner as a number of players figured in the final equation.

In the Ladies Cup Lyn Ludlow did not have the luxury of leading after round one but an excellent second round of nett 66 helped her to claim a win the Ladies Cup.

Club President Len Leigh sponsored Saturday’s event.

In the day’s single events, Ivan Juriss had one of his best rounds for some time. A score of nett 68 was good enough for him to claim the men’s prize. Another countback was required to determine the runner up and it was junior golfer Hamish Adam who got the nod. Adam continues to impress with his good play.

The Ladies Cup winner Lyn Ludlow also took the honours in the Ladies event on Saturday. Runner-up Lorraine Evans had another solid round returning nett 71.

Matt Waterworth claimed the Pin Shot at three. Matt urges owned 12 and Bruce Green was on song at 17.

Nathan Stibbard collected pro-pins at 1/10 and 5/14 with the 9/18 pin won by Richard Reardon. The birdies nest was not collected.

Lyn Ludlow held the pin at three in the ladies comepitition; Lorraine Evans at 12 and Margie Locke at 17.

In the men’s run down, scores of nett 71 and better were rewarded and Linda Kelly collected the ladies run down.

This Saturday the competition is an individual Stableford event. the day is sponsored by Jason Lawer, an ex-junior member and ex-member of the club who is a very capable golfer. Jason often plays when he sponsors and hopefully will be on the course on Saturday. Tee off is from the normal time of 11.30am for the afternoon session and there is a time sheet is on the board at the club.
