Purple Heart lacks heart

It’s seems people either love or hate Netflix’s new movie, Purple Hearts. So is it a beautiful love story or a total flop?

Now I normally love a fake dating trope, but this movie was bad.

It tries to play the opposites attract card but fundamentally misunderstands how that works.

Opposites attract means “oh they like parties and people and I like books and staying home” not “I’m a human with views of my own and he tells me my views don’t matter”.

The whole “she doesn’t like soldiers because her mum dated lots of them” thing was enough, they didn’t need to add in the extremely different values.

Personally, I do think you need to date someone with the same core values as you. Disagreeing on little things is fine, but how do you reconcile totally different views on big picture ideas?

This movie could also definitely do without the casual racism and sexism, but at the very least they could have had people grow as characters and become better.

The male lead never changes his views, nor does the female lead, but she just stops voicing hers.

One of my big problems with the movie is that the main plot point of it all, that Sofia Carson’s character can’t afford the insulin she needs to live, fades into the background as the movie goes on.

I thought we were going to get some commentary on this but we never do.

Other plot points also seem to be totally skated over, or land weirdly when they do address them.

Take the plot point of them getting caught. It made no sense.

Please, characters in movies, just be better at lying.

There was definitely some proof of our little fake daters ruse out there, but I can think of some fairly convinces lies they could have told to cover their tracks.

It seems people online either love this movie or hate it.

On one side you have people saying their chemistry is insane and on the other you have people saying hmm the racism and sexism isn’t for me.

I thought their chemistry was pretty bad, but I don’t know that I’ve seen Sofia Carson have good chemistry with anyone.

The music is fine, I guess? You might need subtitles for it, though.

Yeah, don’t watch this movie. Just don’t do it. It’s time you won’t get back.
