Key Stanthorpe events, 1933:

1933

April 4

• The Fruit Fly Back Again

Owing to the prolific season experienced by fruit-growers of the Granite Belt, the measures prescribed for dealing with the fruit fly and keeping it in check have not been as rigidly observed as they should have been. Clean-ups are ordered (cover, boil, burn or bury) and prosecution is threatened.

April 13

• Proposed 11th Light Horse Regiment one vacancy, Stanthorpe given preference.

May 9

• Stanthorpe Landing Ground sold to be ploughed up. QANTAS suggested that Stanthorpe

Shire Council take action. Aero Club now defunct and the matter left in chairman’s hands.

May 12

• COD Protect Meeting – Vote of No Confidence. 150-200 present.

June 9

• Stanthorpe Hospital – Shire Council grants money to carry on to July 31

June 20

July 4

• “New South Wales proposal to eliminate the mail train between Wallangarra and Sydney and induce the Queensland authorities to run the mail train from Brisbane to Wallangarra as such times to enable it to connect with the Glen Innes mail which would be extended to Wallangarra to bring on the passengers and convey them to Sydney.

Brisbane to Wallangarra train would leave Brisbane at 3 am instead of 8 am; the Down train would arrive in Brisbane eight hours later (2.40 am). Such a train would be a little value to people residing between Wallangarra and Brisbane and would most assuredly drive people to use motor transport instead of the railway.”

(Mail train would leave Wallangarra at 5 am, arrive Brisbane 2.30am, depart Brisbane 3.30am)

• Orient Cup won three years in succession

August 29-September 26:

• “In the Wake of the Bounty” series by Charles Chauvel

December 8

• Meeting of delegates – re-establish quota system

• The Show Society is £1550 in debt, appeals for help. Will be impossible to hold a show in 1935 if the 1934 effort is not helped by everybody.
