Killarney show had everybody jumping

The dogs were high jumping, the cattle and horses came in droves, the rodeo was a huge success and the Smash up derby took an unusual turn as the Killarney Show returned after a year’s absence due to Covid.

A tired but happy Killarney Show Society President Jan Hamilton said the event went off well despite a couple of last-minute changes and attracted locals and out of towners alike.

“We had a really successful show, the weather was very kind to us,” she said.

“We had really good crowds, a great rodeo full of action. Saturday night had all the novelty events where all the locals get together and roll bales of hay together – it was really really good.

“Our lows were we had to cancel the stud cattle because on the Friday afternoon something happened and a large entry couldn’t come. So, it was postponed at the last minute on the Friday night.

“And then on the Saturday night we only had one entry in the Smash Up Derby – and it was our local car. Usually we have six to ten cars for that. But that didn’t matter because we had motorbikes there, we have novelty races for father’s and sons, mother’s and sons. So instead they had sprints with the one smash up car and the motorbikes. The car was put together Killarney Autoworks and it was spraypainted by Paul Stumkat – it was all local so it was a real highlight.

“The other highlights were our rodeo was fantastic on Friday night it was very well attended and it went until midnight and nearly everyone stayed until midnight to party.

“We had a great showing of prime cattle on Friday morning, we had more than 50 entrants. And then we had the dog high jumping and the showjumping started at 8am and went well into the afternoon. It was a great quality line-up horses.”
