Steam through history

Head on down the the Southern Downs Steam Railway precinct to take part in their Jumpers and Jazz festivities.

The Southern Downs Steam Railway (SDSR) is set to receive significant upgrades, enhancing the experience for passengers and visitors.

The renovations aim to revitalise the historic Warwick Railway Station, originally built in 1886, ensuring it remains a vibrant and welcoming hub for locals and tourists alike.

SDSR association chairman Kelvin Hutchinson said the upgrades will include substantial internal renovations, with new toilets, modern lighting, and updated plumbing fixtures. The station will also benefit from upgraded landscaping, air conditioning, fresh painting, and new floor coverings.

“These improvements will preserve the station’s historic charm while providing modern amenities,” Mr Hutchinson said.

A major highlight of the renovation is the introduction of the Railway Café. The café will embrace a railway history theme, offering a range of meals and drinks sourced from local businesses and service providers. With both internal and external seating available on the platform, the café will also cater to events held in the adjoining ballroom, creating a versatile space for dining and gatherings.

“We want the Railway Café to be a place where the community can come together and enjoy locally sourced food in a setting that honours our rich railway history,“ Mr Hutchinson said.

Despite the extensive work planned, there will be no disruptions to passenger flow at the station. All construction activities will be carried out internally, ensuring that it remains business as usual for travellers.

The Railway will still be a vibrant hub during the Jumpers and Jazz in July festival where visitors can look forward to live entertainment, sausage sizzles, and regular coffee and tea services at the Warwick Railway Station.

The station plans to collaborate with local businesses and artists during Jumpers and Jazz to create a festive environment. Once the renovations are complete, local artists’ work will be featured, alongside sales of novelty items and fresh produce. Entertainers will also be part of the festivities, enhancing the cultural experience for visitors.

“We are excited to partner with local artists and businesses to make the Southern Downs Railway Station a focal point of community engagement and cultural celebration,“ Mr Hutchinson said.

These upgrades not only preserve the historical significance of the Southern Downs Railway Station but also ensure it continues to serve as a central and lively part of the community.
