History of car display

The vintage cars on display in previous years.

In 2004, the seeds of the Jumpers and Jazz in July Festival were sown when the question “What do you think about Jumpers on Trees, Jazz in the Streets, and Jalopies on display, all happening in July?” This conversation sparked the creation of what has become one of the festival’s signature events, the Grand Auto Display.

Initially featuring jalopies, the event saw these classic cars disappear from the lineup for several years before making a return as the Grand Vintage Car Display. Fast forward 20 years from those early days, and the Grand Automobile Display has evolved into a showcase of more than 250 veteran, vintage, classic, and muscle cars, including classic motorcycles and machinery. This event has solidified Warwick’s reputation as the “Horsepower Capital of Australia.“

Billed as the “something for everyone“ event in the festival program, the Grand Automobile Display attracts a diverse crowd. While some may consider it a day for the fellas, many ladies would challenge that notion. The static display of vehicles throughout Warwick’s historic main street, now expanded into Leslie Park, offers car enthusiasts ample opportunity to showcase their prized possessions and festival attendees the chance to marvel at these automotive treasures.

But the Grand Automobile Display is more than just a car show. The day is enhanced by the vibrant atmosphere created by three live jazz stages, almost 100 trees wrapped in textile art, and artisan pop-up stalls throughout the CBD, showcasing the Showcasing Our Ateliers Precinct. This blend of sights and sounds transforms the streets into a lively celebration of creativity and community.

Reflecting on the event’s evolution from a modest gathering of jalopies to a grand display with upwards of 250 exhibits, there is a sense of pride and appreciation for the dedicated working group who spend months organising this highlight of the festival. Their efforts ensure that each year, the Grand Automobile Display exceeds expectations, bringing joy and excitement to all who attend.
