STAR

If it weren’t for Warwick volunteers offering transportation services, many of those living with disabilities in the shire would find themselves housebound and isolated.

Limited access to affordable transport on the Southern Downs is one of the key factors contributing to restricted community participation for many, especially for the elderly, people with disability and those who may be financially disadvantaged.

To help support locals with disabilities get around, STAR Community Services has opened an office in Warwick and is looking for more volunteers to transport those with disabilities to a range of cultural, educational and occupational activities.

Star is an award winning aged care and disability support services provider that specialises in providing government subsidised transport to vulnerable members of the community.

“Our local office will enable us to expand our services and reach more people who may need reliable and affordable transport options for the Southern Downs,” said Patsy Wilshire, CEO of STAR Community Services.

“If you have a few spare hours and a desire to support your community, please give us a call. We provide full training and support to get you started. Your time can truly make a real difference in the life of a person who may otherwise feel isolated and disconnected,“ said Ms Wilshire.

Local community volunteers like Greg Flint are the driving force behind STAR’s transport service.

“After I retired, I was looking for something meaningful to do with my time. My wife told me STAR is looking for drivers. I signed up straight away. I really enjoy talking to my passengers. They have great stories. We often talk about what is happening locally. It’s a great way to meet new people,” said Mr Flint.

Wendy Lane, has been accessing STAR’s transport service in Warwick to get to her volunteering role at the local Queensland Country Women’s Association branch.

“I started volunteering with CWA in July last year. I enjoy helping out by making sandwiches and serving food at the meetings. STAR helps me continue my volunteering work which is very important to me.”

Eighty five year old Cynthia is another local resident using STAR to get to her medical appointments.

“After I lost my license, I found it very difficult to get around. Before I signed up with STAR, my daughter had to come from Brisbane to drive me to my doctor’s appointments in Toowoomba. Now that I am with STAR, I am relieved. I get picked up from home by a STAR vehicle. My drivers are local volunteers and I always have a good chat with them. After my appointment, I am home safe and sound.”

STAR’s transport services are available to the elderly, those with disabilities and financially disadvantaged people.

STAR offers reliable and affordable government subsidised door-to-door transport under various funding streams including the Community Transport Program, NDIS and My Aged Care (MAC).

STAR Community Services is a non-profit organisation operating since 1996. The service specialises in providing government subsidised transport to vulnerable members of the community with the aim of supporting their independence and linking them to their local community.
