In yet another indication of the severity of the drought afflicting the region Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) has closed Girraween National Park south of Stanthorpe to camping due to water shortages, “until further notice”.
A statement released by QPWS this week says the park will remain open for day visitors.
“Bald Rock Creek, the water supply for Girraween National Park, has stopped flowing and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service is currently using water conservation measures to help retain a water supply for park staff and visitors during the drought conditions,” the statement said.
“Girraween National Park will remain open for all types of day use, and remote walkers will still be able to camp if they have a valid camping permit.
“Park visitors are reminded that the Granite Belt region offers a wide range of private accommodation.
“The reopening of the camping areas is dependent on rainfall, and will occur when water levels return to a level where pumping can resume.
“Campers are eligible for a credit or refund if they have permits for periods after the closure date.
“QPWS apologises for any inconvenience from this closure.”
