Fire contained at Warwick East State School

Fire crews contained a blaze which broke out at Warwick East State School at around 1.30pm today, Friday 19 July.

The timber classroom and administration building near the corner of Fitzroy and Canning Streets was partially gutted.

Students of the school were safely evacuated to the ovals after the fire broke out and it is understood none were in the classrooms when the fire broke out during the lunch break.

The original Warwick National School building – from 1864 and one of the earliest school buildings in Queensland – was not affected.

Firefighters had the fire well under control by 2.30pm. The classrooms on the western end of the building have been destroyed and there is extensive smoke damage to the administration section which includes the principal’s office and reception area.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) spokeswoman told the Free Times a fire investigator is expected to visit the scene tomorrow, Saturday 20 July, to attempt to determine the cause of the fire.
