Pink diamonds set to become even greater rarity

John Walsh of Warwick Watchmakers and Jewellers says pink diamonds will ''skyrocket'' in price and value later this year.

In case you didn’t already know, Australia produces the finest pink diamonds anywhere in the world – and later this year they’re predicted to skyrocket in value.

That’s because the famous pink Argyle diamond is becoming harder and harder to find, and those who mine for them deep in the Kimberley region of Western Australia plan to phase out operations in the latter half of 2020.

Diamonds are formed over billions of years and pink diamonds are located so far down in the earth that the process of finding and extracting them is much more challenging – as well as time-consuming and labour-intensive – than you might realise.

Thousands upon thousands of tonnes of earth and rock must be excavated to produce what Warwick jeweller John Walsh describes as a mere “champagne-cup” equivalent volume of pink diamonds in any given year.

It’s for that reason that production in Australia will come to an end in around September or October of this year.

But the good news is that a pink diamond you buy anytime soon – say, for example, in time for Mother’s Day (hint, hint) – will significantly increase in value as they become even rarer than they are already.

Warwick Watchmakers and Jewellers and Rose City Jewellers – owned and operated by the Walsh family for more than 30 years – have a truly dazzling selection of Certified Australian Pink Diamond pieces and ‘sets’, including rings, earrings and pendants, and priced competitively in time for Mother’s Day.

“Australia has always produced the best ‘pinks’ in the world,” John Walsh told the Free Times.

“They have an incredible depth and complexity of colour and part of their value also comes from the challenge of finding them.

“Which is why production is being phased out in the next few months – they’re just becoming so much harder to locate.

“It certainly does mean they’re going to become a significant investment ongoing – but they’ll also make a perfect Mother’s Day gift.”

ABOUT ARGYLE DIAMONDS…TO LEARN MORE VISIT – argylepinkdiamonds.com.au

Across the breadth of 1.6 billion years, journeying from the crucible of the earth, emerges the most intriguing diamond in history. Revered for its exquisite beauty and provenance, the Argyle pink diamond is coveted as the most esteemed diamond in the world.

While natural fancy coloured diamonds are scarce, Argyle pink diamonds are inherently so. So rare are they that less than an entire year’s worth of supply over half a carat would fit in the palm of one’s hand, while the number of red, blue and violet diamonds can be counted on one hand alone. The finest of each year’s discoveries, just 50-60 of these rare natural treasures are brought to life as polished masterpieces and offered for sale each year as part of the Argyle Pink Diamonds Tender.

The Argyle Diamond Mine is the world’s only consistent source of pink diamonds, accounting for more than 90 percent of the world’s pink diamond supply; although this treasure trove will not continue in perpetuity.

As awareness around their rarity deepens, Argyle pink diamonds are increasingly sought-after – acquired by collectors and connoisseurs around the world for their personal holdings and bespoke jewellery creations.
