The ‘new’ Palmer Bridge at Freestone and another new bridge at Upper Forest Springs Road at Goomburra jointly completed by the Southern Downs Regional Council and the Federal Government were officially opened last week by Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi and Federal MP for Maranoa David Littleproud.

A council spokeswoman said Palmer Bridge was originally built in the 1964 by the Department of Main Roads.

“The bridge across Freestone Creek is called Palmer Bridge in honour of the Palmer Brothers, one of whom held the office of Deputy Chairman of the Glengallan Shire council,” the spokeswoman said.

Cr Pennisi said he was thrilled to see our region’s important infrastructure being updated.

“The Bridge Renewal Program really helps regional Councils like us ensure our infrastructure is current and maintained to the best possible standard,” said Cr Pennisi said.

“Projects like this one are testament to what can be achieved when Local and Federal Governments work together.

“Palmer Bridge has been a part of our region since the 1960’s and it’s really nice to see it receive this attention and care.”

Southern Downs Regional Council secured $1,234,412 from the Australian Government’s Bridge Renewal Program Round 3 to replace the existing timber bridge with the new concrete single span bridge.

For the Upper Forest Springs Road bridge the council secured $301,400 from the Bridge Renewal Program Round 4 to replace the existing timber bridge with the new concrete structure.
