Raising money twice over

Hit the op shop and head to the ball to raise money.

Head to the Op Shops and grab some glad-rags for Heritage Winery’s Op Shop Ball 10 October, from 6pm.

Therese Fenwick from Heritage Estate Winery said event would not only act as a fundraiser for the local cancer support group but as participants are being encouraged to find their outfits through Op Shops, other charities will also benefit.

“We’re calling it a ball though it’s more like a dinner,” she said.

“We’ll have music playing but it will not necessarily be ballroom dancing because – you aren’t allowed to dance in Covid.

“So it’s going to be an Op Shop ball where we’d like you to come dressed from the Op Shops and we will have one prize for the best dressed male and two prizes for the best-dressed females – because they always go all out (the girls). If possible it would be nice if groups of people could bring a centre piece for a table which they’ve acquired from an Op Shop.

“If there is a group coming then bringing a centre piece would be great. If that gets taken up then we will look at a prize for the best-dressed table.”

The event promises to not only be a lot of fun and a chance to raise money but it has the potential to be very colourful.

“We are hoping not just for dresses but for shawls and ties and whatever else you can pick up from the op shop that looks fabulous,” Therese said.

The $65 ticket price includes a three-course meal from Chef Sharah-Bree Cowper and a glass of champagne on arrival.

“We like the really idea of the double benefit with the Op Shop benefitting as well and I like the whole idea of somebodies trash being somebody elses treasure and not becoming landfill,” she said.

“Heritage has long had a history of having second-hand things here – the whole building is repurposed – it used to be an apple store and was built in the 1940s and was changed to a winery 30 years ago by building up the walls with second-hand bricks from a house that was a 100 years old. The bricks were from the Dalveen brick works, there’s a beam from the Sydney Harbour Bridge in this building, there’s carpet from the Grande Hotel in Coolangatta that was being thrown out 30 years ago. There are odds and sods, bits and bobs and pieces from around the whole building. We have tables and chairs from all over the place.

“Doing this in the Op Shop theme certainly suits the Heritage look.”
