Celebrating a century

By Dominique Tassell

Pozieres State School held their 100th anniversary celebration over the weekend, opening up the school for visitors old and new.

The had rooms open with displays of memorabilia and examples of past and present classrooms.

A book by Paul Munson was launched at the event, detailing the history of the school and area.

Paul could not be in attendance due to health issues, but his daughter spoke on his behalf.

The celebrations were officially launched by singing the school song, which most in attendance will probably concur is still stuck in their head.

Pozieres State School Principle, Adrian Fenney, took to the stage as the first speaker, joking that the event was held in his honour for being the longest running principal of the school.

Member for Southern Downs, James Lister, also spoke, as did Southern Downs Regional Councillor, Vic Pennisi.

Jeff McMahon, organiser of the event, took to the stage as well.

The cake was then cut by two first day pupils, and the two youngest pupils currently attending the school.

Lunch was organised by Rotary Stanthorpe, with a bar by Lions Stanthorpe.
