Fun run participant returns 50 years later

Robert returned to Stanthorpe 50 years later for the fun run.

One man on a mission: that’s former Stanthorpe local Robert Embery, who returned home for the Mt Marlay Fun Run in March.

The 10km challenge occurred at this year’s Apple and Grape Harvest Festival and has been an iconic staple of the town, running for many years.

In fact, Robert himself participated in the challenge in 1972, back when it was a 5km run.

50 years after his first run, Robert returned in honour of Stanthorpe turning 150.

And what’s more?

He was wearing the same number on his shirt, both runs 50 years apart.

“I’ve been a runner since my primary school and high school years,” Robert reflected.

“For my first Mt Marlay run, I entered in the spare of the moment – the running course also used to be different.”

Robert grew up at The Summit and went to Stanthorpe State High School, and said he has always enjoyed running for fitness.

“I’ve come back to Stanthorpe periodically since leaving for Sydney,” he said.

“I ran all the time until six years ago, and just before the Covid shutdown, I got back into training for Apple and Grape – the 50 year anniversary of my first run falling on Stanthorpe’s 150th year birthday felt special.”

Although he didn’t place, Robert acknowledged with humour that his goal was simply to finish.

“Perhaps that was my last fun run – all I was thinking about was, ‘I can do this’,” he reflected.

“I do have strong associations with Stanthorpe though and whenever I got the chance, I like to go back.”

Robert’s inspiring effort is a testament to dedication and commitment, and who knows: maybe Robert will be back in the running arena sooner than he thinks.
