The Queensland Government is awarding Southern Downs Regional Council (SDRC) $204,006 in direct funding to deliver public library services and First 5 Forever programs, as revealed at last week’s council meeting.

Minister for Communities and Housing, Minister for Digital Economy and Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch MP sent a letter to SDRC advising council of this funding through the state government’s program ‘Creative Together: 10 Year Roadmap for arts, culture and creativity’ in Queensland.

“In 2022-23, your council will receive this direct funding to enable the delivery of public library services and First 5 Forever programs that provide your council with the opportunity to connect with families to deliver early literacy outcomes for all Queensland children aged 0-5 years,” Ms Enoch said.

“This recognises the importance of partnerships with local government in strengthening Queensland communities and driving social change across the state.

“Our partnership with your council helps ensure Queenslanders, no matter where they are living can access services, opportunities, learning programs and benefits through their local public library or Indigenous Knowledge Centre.”

However, Cr Stephen Tancred asked how council would best utilise this funding for the Stanthorpe library in the wake of its relocation.

A council spokesperson said the funding could also be used for items like books and regardless of movement at said library, the programs would still be able to be completed.

The Stanthorpe Library will close its current location at 6pm on Friday 12 August and reopen its doors at 10 am on Monday 29 August at 61 Marsh Street.
