New scam targeting Whatsapp users

A new scam known as the “mum and dad” scam has been circulating among mobile phone users and police are cautioning individuals to be aware.

It involves a scammer messaging a parent on WhatsApp claiming to be their child and asking for money or to pay a bill.

Scammers may pose as family and friends to gain instant trust.

If you get an unexpected message from someone claiming they have a new number or new bank account, call them directly on their usual number to confirm.

Warwick Police acting officer-in-charge Sergeant Cameron Slate said to be wary of online use.

“If anything looks suspect, make further enquiries and try different avenues of communication,” Sergeant Slater said.

Cybercrime Squad detectives are also reminding mobile phone users to remain vigilant, after a spike in reports by victims of a have emerged.
