Southern Downs Regional Council has celebrated the community milestone of the Killarney Co-op marking 100 years.

Southern Downs Mayor Vic Pennisi said it was “a great achievement for a small community to reach such a milestone“.

“My sincere congratulations to all involved, past and present that had the foresight and commitment to keep the vision alive and for the many locals they have serviced over that time.

“As the famous American anthropologist Margaret Mead said ’never doubt that a small dedicated group of individuals can change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever does’.“

Mayor Pennisi said he felt confident that “the future is bright for this organisation and that the model they have embraced will hold them in good stead going forward and that future leaders will continue to embrace this model“.

Deputy Mayor Ross Bartley said it was “with great pleasure that I take this opportunity to wish the Killarney Co-op all the best on reaching this unique milestone“.

“This community-based business that has and continues to provide the Killarney area and surrounding districts with a high level of devotion.

“The Co-op has travelled a journey with interesting and sometimes very challenging times over the past 100 years, and that can greatly be attributed to the dedication of the staff and diligent stewardship of the board members.

“All the best for the future years ahead.“
